Freeley were appointed by Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to demolish the Linden House tower block in the Royal Liverpool Hospital Campus in Liverpool City Centre.
The project involved considerable amounts of licensable and non-licensable asbestos removal prior to demolition works commencing.
The project also involved handling service disconnections/diversions and car park construction following the demolition works.
Control of dust, the minimisation of noise and the management of traffic were key factors taken into account during the project. Due to this the top three storey’s of the building were demolished by hand until the structure was six storey’s high. The operatives were safely strapped in using the latest Man Safe multi rail harnessing system and broke out the floors using breakers. Chutes were incorporated in the scaffolding to safely discharge demolished materials to ground level. The rest of the building was then brought down in a carefully controlled manner using a high reach excavator.
The 9-storey accommodation block was situated in a highly sensitive position between the main hospital and the dental hospital in the Royal Liverpool Hospital campus. There was a busy road to one side of the building and it was close to routes heavily used by staff and visitors so traffic/pedestrian management and health and safety considerations were a top priority during the demolition.
Site hoarding, diversions of existing footpaths were carried out. Specific traffic routes were designed specifically for Freeley vehicles. A competent signaler safely positioned was available at all times. No waste removal vehicles were allowed to wait in the access roads to the site.
